Commissions for municipal archives

1996-2004

A teacher at the academy once told me that Municipal Archives purchases work for their topographical atlas, the collection of etchings, drawings, etc., of their city through the ages.

I decided to approach the Municipal Archives of the Netherlands with a proposal to, in consultation with them, capture contemporary cityscapes using watercolor etching techniques.

If the archives expressed interest, I first created several presentation drawings based on photographs I had taken on-site. From these, the atlas administrator selected the final commission.

This was a success, and from 1996 onward, I created watercolor etchings for Municipal Archives throughout the Netherlands for many years. I also completed similar commissions for private individuals and museums.

Atlas van Stolk

Rondvaart Ajax met de Europacup, 1995

The Atlas van Stolk is the largest image collection on Dutch history and the Dutch Royal Family. The founder of this collection was Abraham van Stolk, a wealthy Rotterdam timber merchant who lived from 1814 to 1896.

In 1997, I was commissioned by the Atlas's manager, Carl Nix, to make a watercolor etching of Prinsjesdag (Prince's Day), and I also made a watercolor etching of Ajax's canal cruise with the European Cup.

Wedding etching of Prince Constantijn and Princess Laurentien

Affiche Oranje huwelijken, 2002

Constantijn and Laurentien were married on May 17, 2001, and the wedding ceremony took place on May 19, 2001, in the Grote or St. Jacobskerk (Great Church) in The Hague.

I was commissioned by the Stolk Atlas to create a watercolor etching of this event.

This etching was displayed at the exhibition "Oranjebruiden" (Orange Brides) at the Schielandhuis and even featured on the poster. The magazine Vorsten wrote an interesting article about the creation of the etching.
